Growing up on a breeding ranch, Thomas was always surrounded by pokemon. While it was expected for him to follow the path of the family business, and become a breeder, he had different ideas as a child. Inspired by the ranch's clientel, Thomas wanted to be a trainer.

At sixteen, he achieved this goal. He got himself a heracross, and set out to become the best pokemon trainer around. His journey lasted ten years until it ended in tragedy. While walking along a mountain path, Thomas slipped off the edge, and landed on a ledge several feet down. While he wasn't fatally wounded, he severely damaged his knee. While everything healed correctly, Thomas' knee was never the same. Extended periods of travel resulted in unbearable pain, and returning to his life as it was before would be difficult.

This setback sent Thomas into a period of depression. He returned to his parents ranch, and spent the next two years moping around. Eventually, his mother got fed up, and forced him to get off his ass and at least help around the ranch.

In the end, this proved to be the push Thomas needed to get back on his feet. Working on the ranch reminded him of the joys of being a breeder, and while he couldn't go out and battle like he used to, he could at least work to raise world class pokemon to help trainers do what he couldn't.
