Long ago, the region of Orre was a place of untold danger, where two groups: Cipher and Snagem, wished to rule the region through the power of shadow pokemon. Pokemon who's hearts had been closed and were used as machines to fight rather than as partners to the trainers who caught them. These groups were defeated by courageous young trainers who wished to free pokemon from these fates and restore peace back to Orre. That peace has lasted many years and perhaps has done more bad than good for the region of Orre. With so much peach, how will the region react to the rumors of Cipher returning once again? The peace has been a blessing indeed, but with peace always springs a new enemy that wishese to destroy it once again. Which side shall you choose in this endless struggle between peace and chaos?

It was impossible to keep going like this! September had bust out of her pokeball countless times and tried to pick fights with local wildlife for no reason. Usually, Alastair had no problem with feisty Pokemon. Hell, he and September had been partners ever since he got here. Capturing her was easy enough and dealing with her was actually fun, but this was ridiculous! How was he supposed to get any work done like this? Taping her pokeball shut didn't seem to do anything either.
"Alright!" he yelled when September bust out of her pokeball again. He yanked on August's reigns and sent the Ponyta rearing in surprise at their sudden stop. Alastair pulled her around and trotted back to the Charmander. September spit fire at August and gave a fearsome growl, scratching at the dirt. "What has gotten into you? We have to get to the designated camp by sun down, you know!"
September gave another growl and spit fire at him. Alastair pulled back on August's reigns, backing up far enough so he wouldn't get burned. September gave another cry and scanned the area. It had been a while since she got to fight. Usually Alastair would have let all his Pokemon stretch and relax by now, but he was pressed to reach the area marked on his map. It was a small little rounded out alcove in the canyon. It was good protection from any dust storms that came through and it was almost in the middle of the canyon itself. A good place to set up while doing some research.
The desert offered a lot of information for Alastair. For one, trainers were wandering all over the place, or so it seemed like. He could do some basic field work and wait to battle someone. Or he could do field work and battle the wildlife. But as long as September was acting oddly, he wasn't going to get anywhere quickly. He sighed and leaned back in the saddle. He looked over his shoulder and stared at the lonely path ahead.
"Fine. You can ride on the saddle. If we come across anything you can battle, we'll stop." He reached down and scooped the Charmander up and put her on the saddle behind him. She clung to his jacket and gave a happy gurgle. Alastair sighed and adjusted his goggles. The glass was already clumped with sand and dirt from the ride. His bandana did a lot to keep his lungs free of the debris, but he was burning up. He had to keep his jacket on to prevent his body from losing moisture too quickly in the heat. The worst part was the sweat he could feel dripping down his back. He looked forward to the cold night. Alastair leaned over August's neck and made sure her mask was still in place. It was meant to filter out any dirt and protect her eyes from anything. He used a lot of mask when he was back home training the Zebstrika. You had to take care of your Pokemon in the desert, especially if you depend on them for transportation. Once he made sure her mask was secure, he leaned back.
Alastair kicked his heels against August's sides and the Ponyta started at a walk. He kicked her again and she began a walking trot. He gave a firm kick this time and she darted into a full gallop. September dug her claws into Alastair's sides. He kept scanning the area, hoping he would find something out there that might ease whatever was causing September problems. Honestly, sometimes he felt more like a parent than he did a trainer! Well... he was fine with that.

August had skidded to a stop. Alastair was a little perplexed himself. Why was a small child running around with a swimming tube around her hips and with a swimsuit? The closest body of water was roughly... too far for her to walk to. He knew that much. Alastair was fuzzy on the exact amount of miles. One stretch of desert looked the same as the last few hundred. He was surprised he even knew where he was.
"Are you lost?" he asked her, lowering his bandana so his voice wasn't muffled. She looked up at him with wide eyes.
"No!" She said suddenly. "And I'm not allowed to talk to strangers." She stuck out her tongue and kept walking. Alastair decided to wait. He took off his goggles and scraped the dirt away from them with the edge of his shirt. Before long, the little girl wandered back. "I'm a little lost. You aren't one of those creeps, are you?"
"Nope." He shielded his eyes from the sun and looked off into the distance. "Which way did you come from?"
She pointed. "That way!"
"Well... alright." He dismounted and dragged September off of the saddle. He scooped up the little girl and put her on August's back. He took the reigns and started to walk. "Let me know when we're getting close to a place you recognize. Why are you wearing a swimming tube anyway?"
She crossed her arms. "Wouldn't you like to know?"
"Yes. I would." He focused on walking. He had a feeling this kid was so trusting for a reason. He noticed she had a pokeball on her, and September noticed too. The Charmander was growling and hissing up at her. Parents must have given her a Pokemon for protection, but a Pokemon wouldn't do much if she didn't cover up or have water. Sunburn and freezing to death were two big problems in the desert.
"Your Charmander is mean."
"She's not mean. Just... pent up, I guess. She hasn't had a battle in a while."
"Then let's have a battle!" She jumped off of August and held out her pokeball. "This is my dad's Pokemon! I can beat you with him!"
Alastair sighed. "Can we find your parents first?" He scooped her up again and put her back on the saddle. "Then we can battle."
She crossed her arms. "You aren't from around here, are you?"
"How'd you tell?" His voice was as dry as the dirt. Children... he didn't particularity like them.
"Accent for one. And those tattoos don't belong to any local gangs!" She sounded so sure of that little fact.
"I'm from Unova," he said.
"Oh, so you're a Pidove."
"I'm going to assume that's an insult."
"Yup."
He shielded his eyes and looked up. He could see something. "Hey, those your parents?"
The girl nodded. "Yeah! I slid down one of those ridges when playing with my mom's Dewgong!" She jumped off the saddle again and fixed her swimming tube. "Now we battle!"
Alastair sighed and rolled his shoulders back. "Alright, kid. If you want to. I think Ember has been waiting for it." September jumped in front of Alastair and gave a fierce cry and spat some embers around. Alastair noticed two people watching from the top of the canyon. He gave a shy wave. August let out a neigh towards them. The little girl spun on her heels and waved.
"HEY! IMMA BEAT UP THIS GUY'S CHARMANDER WITH YOUR POKEMON, DAD!" She spun back around and tossed out the pokeball. The Mankey landed on the dirt and raised its paws above its head and gave a cry. September matched it with her own. Alastair gave a sigh. Well, maybe he could calm September down now.
"Alright!" he said, September getting ready, her tail growing brighter. "Smokescreen!"
September's cheeks puffed out and she released the black smoke on the battlefield. The darkness enveloped both Pokemon, but Alastair could make out the faint glow of her tail.
"Low Kick!" The girl cried. Alastair tried to find the monkey in the dirt, but was unable to make it out.
"Ember! Roll!" he called. He could see her flame begin to roll around. The Mankey burst out of the black smoke and rolled against the ground, hurting itself after slamming into a rock. The smoke began to disperse. "Smokescreen towards its eyes!"
Another dark bellow of smoke came from Ember's mouth, this time focusing on the Mankey's direction. The monkey gave a cry and rubbed its eyes, tearing up from the heat and the particles.
"Now use Metal Claw!" Ember charged, her claws gaining a soft glow. She moved quick with her short, stubby legs, and slashed her glowing claws across the belly of the Mankey. The fighting Pokemon backed away and then fell into the dirt.
For a moment, Alastair felt bad about beating the girl's only Pokemon. But September's cry of victory made his heart swell. She spat fire and ran over to him for her usual praise. The battle felt a little too easy for her, she wasn't even panting! But, he was pleased with her performance.
"Aw," she said, recalling the Mankey. "But this is dad's Pokemon."
"That Mankey has a lot of potential," Alastair said, putting on his goggles and putting September up on the saddle. "You just gotta know how to command them. Or, that's what I think. I'm no trainer though."
"Then what do you do?"
Alastair thought about it. "I'm a field researcher. I do crazy things and then get paid for it." He nodded to himself. That was a good job description. He mounted August and gave a wave. He kicked her sides and was off again. He had to get to that alcove before sundown. His stomach was already starting to growl. He really needed dinner.

The sun was beginning to set above the canyon wall, casting half of the canyon into shadow. The shade felt nice, but it was causing Alastair's back to feel chilled. He kicked August's sides again and she galloped faster. He noticed some landmarks he was told about. That rock that looked like a Geodude, but wasn't one. That giant crack in the canyon wall. He had to be getting closer to the designated camp. Eventually he pulled on August's reigns and slowed her down. Oh! There it was. The entrance was nestled up against two larger rocks. The alcove itself was no taller than an Aggron, but it looked wide enough to shelter at least a Snorlax and a half.
August stepped into the alcove, the soft sand inside a different texture from the hard dirt outside. Alastair jumped off and was quick to pull his bags off of her, and then her saddle and bridle. August rolled in the soft sand, snorting loudly. September watched her before kicking up sand herself, specifically at Alastair. His goggles got most of the hits. The Charmander gave a wicked growling laugh.
"Very funny," he said, patting her head. "Mind going to gather some rocks? About this big." He used his hands to try and demonstrate for her. September nodded and ran off in a random direction. Hopefully she wouldn't get lost.
Alastair wiped the sand off of all his stuff before removing his goggles and bandana. He cleaned the goggles, beat the bandana free of dust and dirt, and got to work unpacking. He got out a few basic items to clean August and then a small bucket. He opened one of the gallons of water he had and poured half of it into the bucket and presented it to August. She lapped it up quickly, gulping loudly. Alastair grabbed a cloth and poured a small amount of water over it before carefully wiping her back and sides free of sweat. For a fire type, August could handle a lot of heat, but she still got tired carrying so much on her.
Once all the sweat had been cleaned, Alastair began to brush her, taking special care on her legs. He inspected each leg and each hoof for any damage from the ride before getting the pick and cleaning out clumps of dirt. He then cleaned her shoes before leaving her be to finish drinking her water.
By the time he had finished setting up camp, September had returned. She dropped a few rocks onto the ground and then gave a growl, before running off again. Alastair put the rocks into a circle and built up a nice wall of soft sand along with them. September returned faster and dropped more rocks onto the ground, and then presented Alastair with an item.
"Oh? Is that a Potion?" he asked. He took it from her and inspected it. He wiped the dirt off of the expiration date. It was still good. "Nice, Ember. Thanks!"
The Charmander gave a victorious growl and helped Alastair finish lining up the rocks. He then got out some basic materials he brought with him and dry pieces of plants he gathered while on the ride. He could make a good enough fire to cook with. His Pokemon rested while he worked, intent on finishing cooking everyone's meals before he let anyone else wander free.

He was leading against August, the rest of his team enjoying their dinner. August had eaten faster than everyone else, and was the first to fall asleep. Alastair was sure he wasn't going to be far behind her. Alfredo was already on watch, scanning the area for any sign of danger. Alastair watched Leap and Potato exploring the desert, using September's tail as a guide. They seemed to be having fun, but every time they got out of Alfredo's site, the cat was quick to let out a meow and then drag them back using her psychic powers.
It wasn't long before Alastair fell asleep, curled up under his jacket with his blanket laid out for everyone else. The only Pokemon that didn't need it was Tuesday, who was rather fond of the cold. August's warmth was enough to send Alastair into a deep sleep. It felt like it had only been a few minutes before something was hitting him. He woke up slowly before giving a jump. September was talking to him, with Potato and Leap gathered around. September presented something to him, looking proud.
"Oh?" he asked, his voice groggy from sleep. He took the item and inspected it. "What a pretty rock." He shoved it in his jacket pocket and nestled back down. "Get some sleep, guys. And Leap, switch out with Alfredo soon, alright?"
The Beldum gave a sound of agreement and wandered over to Alfredo, laying down beside her to sleep until it was his turn to keep watch. Alastair yawned and stared at the silver of sky he could see from his position. There were so many stars. Maybe in another life he would have been an astronaut, but he wasn't born in Hoenn. Unova didn't really have a program anymore. Oh well.

The morning was quiet and cool, but Alastair knew it would get hot in no time. He got up as soon as the sun hit his eyes and started to make a simple breakfast. The trick about staying in the desert for a while was to conserve your water, eat a good meal, and then go search for a water source just in case. That was today's goal.
As soon as everyone was done drinking, Alastair saddled August and riding. Only September and Potato were out. Potato to sniff for any signs of vegetation that would need water. September was out because she was a brat that wouldn't stay in her pokeball. August trotted along, moving smoothly over the terrain. The sun had yet to fully rise over the canyon, so they had some time to wander around then get back to camp.
Potato began to bark and Alastair pulled August to a stop. He dismounted and went to see what Potato found. Well, it wasn't water, but it was a dusty great ball. Alastair patted Potato's head and gave him praise before taking the pokeball to the saddle bag. He shoved it in and mounted August again.
Before long, Potato had discovered a few various plants that looked like barrels. They held moisture in their large stems. Alastair made notes of them on his map. They would be helpful if he ran out of water, but he needed an actual running water source.
