Suzume was one of the Tsubaki siblings born into a police family, and as the eldest daughter she had a lot of weight pressed down onto her shoulders. Added to that was the fact that she was the oldest of the neighboring children; whenever they all went out to play, the adults would prod her with remarks like "Watch out for my kids while you're out!" and "Keep my darling child safe, okay?"

She would grow to be restless to leave the situation behind her. School wasn't a real escape option for her, even if she managed to do well enough to qualify for an assistant researcher's program. On her graduation day from normal schooling, her parents gifted her with her own Pokemon partner; a young Houndour pup, with whom she grew attached.
